Devoir de mémoire: The Spirit of the Lion: A Return to the Soil of France | Lillee Jean Trueman Official
As a filmmaker, director, and actor, I find the most powerful narratives are those where history repeats in silence and lives in everlasting bravery. I also find power in truth, historical fact, and reality. Today, the 8th of May, as France honors the 1945 Victory, I am reflecting on all of the bloodlines that made such triumphs possible - people with liberty and liberation in their hearts.
In World War I, my great-uncle, Corporal Frederick Martin Kuttler (Co. C, 319th Infantry, 80th Division), returned to the soil of his family’s birth, Alsace and Belfort, to defend it in 1918. He fell in the Argonne, his sacrifice serving as a prelude to the many soldiers who would later give their lives for the peace we honor this morning.
He was the brother of my great-grandmother, Marie Jeanne. Born in Belfort and raised in Alsace-Lorraine (with both sides coming from the Alsace-Lorraine region), Jeanne came from a family rooted in French soil for centuries. She carried that spirit to America, raising my father with that same unyielding resilience. I am named after her, a daughter of Alsatian and Belfortain blood.
Victory Day belongs to the soldiers, but it also belongs to the families and the women who carried our shared history across oceans so it would never be forgotten. So that these brave soldiers would be honored. To return that spirit to French soil is a debt of honor.
Strength is not found, it's inherited.
"Healed at last by the heroic death of a son... on a battlefield in his parents' native land."
